Coming Soon: Make, A Magazine for Technology Projects

Thus spake Evil Overload
July 30, 2004 at 12:11 pm

For hackers, crackers, and do-it-yourself-ers everywhere, this magazine promises cool project write-ups that will help you create stuff out of other stuff, or modify stuff you already have to do new stuff. It looks to be a blog/print mag. The first edition is scheduled for early 2005. For now, they pacify us with instructions on how to play DVD’s on your PDA, and how to make a camera tripod out of bottlecaps. Link

TinyURL!

This service allows you to take a long URL, and create a short one to substitute for it. The new shorter URL never expires, and can be emailed to people without the email client chopping it up into useless parts. For example, it turned

into

…and will (allegedly) continue to do so forever. Good thing to know. Link

The Fighting Nun is our most popular punching puppet, and with good reason: she has a habit of fighting for what’s right. This is no novice puncher: all you have to do is push the two levers under her habit with your fingers, and she comes out swinging. Her face is made of peach-colored rubber, her boxing gloves are black plastic, and her habit is made from black and white cloth.

IRC Sexbot Passes Turing Test

Thus spake Evil Overload
July 27, 2004 at 7:28 am
The Turing Test for artificial intelligence states that if a machine is intelligent, a human talking to it through a computer-chat interface will be unable to definitely tell whether it is human or machine. This benchmark has served as a guiding light for Artificial Intelligence since its inception in the 50’s, and now someone has written an IRC bot named Jenny18 that innumerable people have mistaken for a real human.
‘eliza’ is a program that talks to you, pretending to be a psychologist. its script of possible responses is super tiny, so it doesn’t fool anyone. or so i thought.

IRC is a network full of chat rooms (or “channels”) where a lot of scary internet people (or “perverts”) hang out. my friend reduz found a version of ‘eliza’ that could go on IRC. he put it on IRC. a lot of people from other countries thought it was a real woman, so naturally they tried to have sex with it. they got frustrated quickly. reduz is a bad man…

so i replaced eliza’s tiny, boring script with a massive dumb blonde script that has like 3,800 responses on all sorts of topics, but mostly sex. jenny18 is very horny and she loves talking to horny guys. and everyone knows the best place to talk to horny guys is on dalnet irc sex channels.

Whether this indicates the intelligence of the Jenny18 program, or the lack of discernment on the part of her partners is open to interpretation. Here’s a link to transcripts of chat sessions with Jenny18.

Worksafety note: Contains no pictures, so basically worksafe, but the textual content is what you’d expect from IRC.

Racist Moron Strains Religious Tolerance, Humiliates Self

This woman, who made headlines last week by reporting an incident in which she was attacked by what she described as a group of Muslim youth, turned out to be making the whole thing up in order to gain her parent’s sympathy/financial support. In a time when world religious and political relations are strained to the breaking point anyway, this is the last thing we need. She should be forced to make a public apology to the Muslim community for inciting fear, suspicion, and resentment against them. Then she should be forced to apologize to everyone else, since the problems of international religious tension affect everybody. Grrrr. Link

Now that’s what I call a party.

No More Knighthood?

Thus spake Evil Overload
July 21, 2004 at 1:52 pm

Is Chivalry finally dead?
The British government may do away with the concept of knighthood:
“The Commons panel made its proposals on the ground that the honors system was “redolent of past preoccupations with rank and class.” It suggested that the word “Commander” as in Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, or C.B.E., had a “militaristic ring” and should be dropped. Furthermore, it argued that the use of the word empire was “anachronistic and insensitive, an inappropriate symbol for today’s Britain” with overtones of imperial domination for citizens with roots in former colonies.”

Whether this means that no further knighting ceremonies will be performed, or whether all Sirs and Dames will have their honors revoked, isn’t made clear. I, for one, hope this doesn’t go through. Anachronistic it may be, but it’s a connection to the past and a symbol of long-held ideals of characer, even if the reality frequently fell short of such ideals. Link

Could Al-Qaeda be Pro-Bush?

Thus spake Evil Overload
at 12:53 pm

From Aaron Swartz: The Weblog:

al-Qaeda Says So: As Reuters reported an letter from an al-Qaeda group said “it supported U.S. President George W. Bush in his reelection campaign, and would prefer him to win in November rather than the Democratic candidate John Kerry, as it was not possible to find a leader ‘more foolish than you (Bush), who deals with matters by force rather than with wisdom. … Kerry will kill our nation while it sleeps because he and the Democrats have the cunning to embellish blasphemy and present it to the Arab and Muslim nation as civilisation. … Because of this we desire you (Bush) to be elected.’ It seems pretty clear this isn’t reverse psychology.

Experts Say So: Anonymous, a top CIA expert on al-Qaeda, has concluded that al-Qaeda loves President Bush, and might go so far as to plan an election attack to rally the country around Bush. “I’m very sure they can’t have a better administration for them than the one they have now. … One way to keep the Republicans in power is to mount an attack that would rally the country around the president.” This isn’t partisanship, because Anonymous is even more hawkish than Bush is.

Facts Say So: Even administration officials concede “al-Qaeda has morphed into a loose and expanding association of regional terror cells [and] the Iraq war has fueled rather than doused the fires of jihad.” Furthermore, Bush let bin Laden escape while he’s left the US dangerously insecure.

Thus spake Sheni

Stephen Hawking is postulating a solution that suggests that black holes don’t actually break down the laws of quantum physics. I think this is on par with the senate preemptively striking down the gay marriage ban.

Meanwhile in Britain..

We fortunately don’t have such a big issue with homosexuality (anyone see the Gay Pride thing in London?) since nearly every TV soap (Eastenders, Brookside etc.) has had at least 1 gay couple in it… but we do have this problem with what is supposedly the fastest growing religion in the US - Islam. We either hear of Asian Muslims up to no good… or something that comes from those one sided stories BNP Supporters saying they’d like to blow up every mosque with a rocket launcher.

Such a fun place to live..
