From our UK Correspondent

Thus spake Edwin

Every year, the Queen makes a TV speech. It’s usually rubbish and I’ve never seen it. Channel Four, provide an alternative speech, hiring someone to say something of their own. This year, Mrs Marge Simpson got to do hers. Since it is unlikely to be aired in the US, here are 3 clips for you.

Clip 1 | Clip 2 | Clip 3

The best bits, not shown in these clips, is either where Marge makes reference to the Beckhams (and David’s alleged affair), Lisa protests in Cornish, Homer believes that Father Christmas and Santa Claus are a gay couple and Marge refers to the friendship between the US and the UK as ‘like you’re mini-me to our Dr. Evil with our zany plans to over take the world’.

P.S. Please do not ask me what it is they drink. Haven’t the foggiest I’m afraid.

Violence in Honduras

Gunmen attack bus in Honduras; 28 dead

Many of dead are women, children; alleged gang member arrested

One of the problems here is that Mara Salvatrucha (a gang) is spreading like wildfire throughout the Americas. The gang originally started in L.A. as a means for Central Americans (Salvadorans) to defend themselves against local Mexican gangs.

After 9-11, the U.S. deported many of the more violent gang members (instead of leaving them in jail where they belong). As a result, the gang populations in Central America have swelled, resulting in more violence, more crime, and an upsurge in narco-trafficking.

Now the countries in Central America are fighting an all out war against gangs like MS and Mara 18.

By the way, I should mention that I now of MS related violence that has occurred in Washington D.C. suburbs like Arlington and Alexandria. Additionally (and a little more scary) is that I have seen MS grafitti near some of the Latino neighborhoods in Athens.

My major point though, is that the US deported criminals, leading to an overall upswing in crime and drug trafficking. Lets here it for our short-sighted policies!

At The Car Wash…On Mars!

Thus spake Evil Overload

Mars, Bitches!
The Opportunity Mars Rover has apparently found a car wash of sorts on Mars. While its counterpart on the other side of the planet, Spirit, has suffered a loss of power due to Martian dust collecting on its solar panels, something is keeping the solar panels on Opportunity nice and clean. Scientists speculate that this may be due to dust devils created by wind currents in the crater that Opportunity is exploring, but admit that they have no imagination whatsoever. Link

Mobile Phones Alter DNA

Thus spake Evil Overload
at 6:39 am

Dammit. Time to invest in one of those headset things for my phones. And lead-reinforced Underoos.

In a four-year study, German researchers exposed human tissue to low-power microwaves, which are emitted by mobile phones, and found that the radiation caused damage to the DNA within the cells, which were kept in a suspension. They also discovered that this effect is increased in areas with a poor signal because the phone uses higher-powered radiation to maintain a connection.

The mobile signals used were within the legal limit of a Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of 2W/kg. They caused the production of free radicals - highly reactive groups of atoms or molecules - which reacted with DNA molecules, causing the DNA to mutate. Cell mutations can result in cancerous growths.

Scientists at Reproductive Genetics Institute in Chicago may have figured out a way to harvest stem cells without killing the embryo from whence they came, which, if it pans out, may allow stem cell research to proceed with no (or, at least, fewer) ethical quandaries. Link

French Launch New Spy Satellite

Thus spake Evil Overload
at 6:43 pm

The French government has just launched a new spy satellite that is expected to greatly increase the, er, military potential of France:

The French military will “benefit from additional capabilities, more precise images and faster reaction speed,” Defense Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said at a screening room at the Paris academy.

Among expected functions, the satellite is to monitor possible weapons proliferation, prepare and evaluate military operations and digitally map terrain for cruise missile guidance, the French Defense Ministry said in a statement Friday.

Moon Power!

Thus spake Evil Overload
at 6:31 pm

Apparently the moon may be a rich source of fuel for fusion reactors in the post-fossil-fuel economy. Read on:

Fill ‘er up!
“Mineral samples from the moon contained abundant quantities of helium 3, a variant of the gas used in lasers and refrigerators as well as to blow up balloons.

“When helium 3 combines with deuterium (an isotope of hydrogen) the fusion reaction proceeds at a very high temperature and it can produce awesome amounts of energy,” Taylor told AFP.

“Just 25 tonnes of helium, which can be transported on a space shuttle, is enough to provide electricity for the US for one full year,” said Taylor, who is in the north Indian city of Udaipur for a global conference on moon exploration.”

The Myth of al-Zarqawi ?

Thus spake Antropologo
December 16, 2004 at 7:00 pm

“The Mukhabarat [Baathist Intelligence] was desperate for a way to divert attention from the fact that it was behind the attacks against Iraqi civilians. Iraqis killing Iraqis would turn the public against the resistance. It needed a foreign face, and al-Zarqawi provided it. A few planted CD disks later, and the al-Zarqawi myth was born.”

“Right now, the Mukhabarat controllers of the al-Zarqawi network think themselves clever as they watch the US military play into their hands through the destruction of Falluja, and the futile search for a phantom menace. ”
