Rumors

It can be fun to see local theater when there are no annoying accents. Does this make me cultured? I saw Rumors performed by the Town and Gown Players last night, and here is what I thought about it.

Food fantasies

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a story that really caters to children’s fantasies of the taste buds. But what about adultren’s fantasies? I’m thinking I’d like to take a boat down a river of steaming coffee through a meadow of doughnuts. And I’m sure many would think of fantasies about beer. Imagine a beer brewed by singing little men.

Mars, Bitches!

July 29, 2005 at 1:40 pm

“The Red Planet is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter’s gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power m! magnification, Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the East at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That’s pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.”

Attorney General Extraordinaire, Mark Spitzer, recently uncovered evidence of BMG engaging in pay for play with a number of radio stations.

Thus spake Joanne

Q Is it true Karl Rove was the first person to leak John Roberts’ name to the media last night? (Laughter.)

MR. McCLELLAN: Next question. Les.

Q I yield to the others, because I have one that goes overseas.

MR. McCLELLAN: Go ahead, Bob.

Q In Chicago in December of ‘03, the President said, “I want to know who the leakers are.” Separate from the legal issue, is the President convinced now that Karl Rove was one of the leakers?

MR. McCLELLAN: I’ve answered these questions, and I don’t have anything to say beyond what I’ve already said.

Go ahead.

Q What’s the answer to that one, then, Scott?

MR. McCLELLAN: I’ve answered these questions over the course of the last week.

Laser Etched Fruit

Thus spake Tycho
July 19, 2005 at 8:08 pm

“I was picking all the little stickers from the Piggly Wiggly off my plums and my avocado pears and my peaches,” said Ms. Lemeaux, 76. “Then I had to make fruit salad out of the ones that got hurt when I took the stickers off, and then I had to wash the glue off the other ones before I put them in the fruit bowl.”

“One time,” she said, “I got up the next morning and looked in the mirror and there were two of them up in my hair.”

Personally, I just think stickers are gross. Long live the laser beam! Link.

AP Reviews McClellan’s Past Denials

Thus spake Tycho
July 18, 2005 at 3:05 pm

I know the press is eating McClellan alive lately, and I’m alright with that. But I still regard them as a pack of opportinistic goofs, so I was surprised to see this, an AP re-cap of two instances from 2003 where McClellan said Rove & Libby were not the source of the leak and excerpts from Matt Cooper on yesterday’s Meet the Press confirming that they were in fact two of his sources concerning Valerie Plame. It’s almost thoughtful and useful. Just what I’ve come not to expect. Too bad it’s prolly just a fluke.

Thus spake Joanne

Q Does the President believe it’s appropriate for the RNC to continue to weigh in on this matter? They put out another memo today, with a top-10 Joseph Wilson lies. If indeed it’s an ongoing investigation and it’s improper for the White House to discuss it, does he think it’s proper for the Republican Party to weigh in on it?

MR. McCLELLAN: You know, Geoff, I appreciate the question, and as you heard me say yesterday, we are not going to prejudge the outcome of the investigation based on media reports. And I’m not going to get into —

Q What about the RNC, though, Scott?

MR. McCLELLAN: No, I said, I’m not going to get into discussing matters relating to an ongoing investigation. We’ll let the investigation come to a conclusion, and then I’ll be more than happy to talk about it, as will the President.

Q Does the President — did he yesterday get his —

MR. McCLELLAN: What I’m telling you is that those are all questions relating to an ongoing investigation.

Q Did the President get his news yesterday about Justice Rehnquist’s health from media reports?

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, Andy Card and I did, and Andy Card and I informed the President in the Oval Office yesterday, shortly after the news reports came out. I think that that was the case previously, when the Chief Justice went into the hospital, we didn’t have any advance notification either.

Q So why is it acceptable for him to base his information about the Chief Justice’s health on news reports, but not about an investigation within the West Wing? What’s the distinction there?

MR. McCLELLAN: Oh, I think there’s a lot of distinctions there. This is relating to an ongoing criminal investigation. There are clear distinctions in that. That’s a nice try to get us to discuss an ongoing investigation, but I think we need to let that investigation continue.

Q Let me just try one last thing, Scott, because I wasn’t here yesterday.

MR. McCLELLAN: Hang on, hang on. I’ll come to your question, Geoff. I’d like an opportunity to be able to talk before you all jump in, too.

We have said for quite some time that this is an ongoing investigation, and that we weren’t going to get into discussing it. So that’s not something that’s new as of this week.

Q But should the RNC be talking about it?

MR. McCLELLAN: Again, I said yesterday, and we have been through a couple of days of questions relating to this investigation, I said I’m happy to talk about it once it’s over, but until that time, we’ll let the investigation continue.

Q Scott, when the President asked that question at Sea — was asked that question at Sea Island, and, in fact, when you made your statement that Karl had had nothing to do with this, was there an ongoing investigation at that time?

MR. McCLELLAN: Again, we’ve been through this for two days now, and I’ve already responded to those questions.

Go ahead, April.

Q I’m going to give you another —

Q I’m sorry, I wasn’t here yesterday, so could you refresh my memory? Was there an ongoing investigation —

MR. McCLELLAN: The briefings are available online.

Q — at the time that you answered previous questions on this issue?

MR. McCLELLAN: Again, I responded to those questions the past couple of days. Go ahead.

Q The answer is, yes.

Q Scott, how long has the President known that Karl Rove spoke in 2003 to at least one reporter about Joseph Wilson’s wife?

MR. McCLELLAN: That’s a question relating to the investigation. You’ve had my response on those questions.

Q Was it like a big surprise to him this week and when the story broke about it?

MR. McCLELLAN: Again, it’s an ongoing, continuing investigation, and I think I’ve addressed why I’m not going to get into discussing it further at this time.

Q So I understand your reluctance to talk. Now, Mr. Rove’s attorney, Mr. Luskin, spoke to reporters a few days ago. Would you be willing to allow your attorney to speak to reporters about these matters?

MR. McCLELLAN: Next question. I’m not going to get into discussing the investigation at this point.

Q: Scott, this is ridiculous. The notion that you’re going to stand before us, after having commented with that level of detail, and tell people watching this that somehow you’ve decided not to talk. You’ve got a public record out there. Do you stand by your remarks from that podium or not?

MCCLELLAN: I’m well aware, like you, of what was previously said. And I will be glad to talk about it at the appropriate time. The appropriate time is when the investigation…

Q: (inaudible) when it’s appropriate and when it’s inappropriate?

MCCLELLAN: If you’ll let me finish.

Q: No, you’re not finishing. You’re not saying anything. You stood at that podium and said that Karl Rove was not involved. And now we find out that he spoke about Joseph Wilson’s wife. So don’t you owe the American public a fuller explanation. Was he involved or was he not? Because contrary to what you told the American people, he did indeed talk about his wife, didn’t he?

MCCLELLAN: There will be a time to talk about this, but now is not the time to talk about it.

Q: Do you think people will accept that, what you’re saying today?

MCCLELLAN: Again, I’ve responded to the question.

Ben Stein, This is Your Conscience, Motherfucker!

Thus spake Tycho
July 9, 2005 at 2:26 pm

Stein writes:
“Can anyone even remember now what Nixon did that was so terrible? He ended the war in Vietnam, brought home the POW’s, ended the war in the Mideast, opened relations with China, started the first nuclear weapons reduction treaty, saved Eretz Israel’s life, started the Environmental Protection Administration. Does anyone remember what he did that was bad?

Oh, now I remember. He lied. He was a politician who lied. How remarkable.”

I guess it’s hard for Ben to face facts since as a 70s Republican tough guy wannabe he was a speechwriter for Nixon (a fact they fail to mention when they list Stein’s credentials at the article’s end).

Nixon did plenty illegally and covertly and it was plenty bad. How about promoting a bloody military coup in Chile which deposed the democratic government. Bad enough for you?

Ben Stein, I hope you get syphillis.
