HOUSEWORK DECREASES CHANCES OF DEVELOPING BREAST CANCER

Seriously. I didn’t make this shit up. It’s actual, legitimate science:

Pre-menopausal women who did housework were found to be about 30 per cent less likely to develop breast cancer than pre-menopausal women who did none.

And Another One

The researchers analysed data on work, leisure and housework activity levels among 218,169 women aged 20 to 80 from nine European countries including the UK.

They followed the women for an average of 6.4 years, during which time 3,423 developed breast cancers. When all forms of activity were combined, being active appeared to offer a protective effect only to post-menopausal women.

However when the results were examined in more detail it was found that women who did the most housework had significantly reduced risks while work- and recreation-based activity had less effect.

It makes me wonder what other factors are involved in this. Does this apply specifically to breast cancer, or is it equally applicable to all forms of cancer? What sorts of environmental factors are involved? It mentions in the article that pre-menopausal women who performed housework did so for an average of 17.7 hours a week. Could it be that some women could do more housework because they had fewer non-domestic obligations (no job, part-time job), and therefore less stress than women who were working full time jobs and trying to fulfill domestic obligations? You also have to wonder about the role of nutrition in this. I’m assuming that some of this housework is cooking, which might indicate that some of these women are eating healthier meals.

Merry Christmas!

The Real History of the American School System

This article offers a brief outline of the beginnings of the Prussian school system, on which the American system is based. It portrays a system designed to produce a more prodcutive, more compliant workforce amongst the lower classes, assuming that the upper classes would get a true education in private schools.

And so today we have a public school system which has as its primary goal the socialization of our children. A willingness to comply, to go along, to submit to the authority of the system and the teacher is more important than intelligence or curiosity or creativity. Those kids who go along are rewarded with good grades. Those who don’t naturally submit their will to the authority figures, the teachers, are often crushed.

Buxfer is an online debt counter that you can use with roommates, friends, work colleagues, etc.

I read about it in the ink paper yesterday. It’s brilliant.
