Thank goodness, I was afraid I’d wind up as Piers Anthony or something.

I am:
Kurt Vonnegut

For years, this unique creator of absurd and haunting tales denied that he had anything to do with science fiction.

Which science fiction writer are you?

Metabolism, Not Mutation?

Research has revealed that an existing drug used to treat metabolic disorders, dichloroacetate or DCA, might also be used to kill cancer cells. And get this: it does so by reactivating the mitochondria in the cancer cells, which reactivates apoptosis, the means by which the body normally kills off out-of-control cells. Apparently cancer cells don’t use their mitochondria to produce energy, because the arrangement of cells in a tumor prevent them from getting enough oxygen for normal cellular processes. This article contains a number of interesting insights about cancer, among them that lack of oxygen plays a key role in the “immortality” of cancers, and that mitochondria are key to the body’s coordination of its component parts. Anyway, Link.

The Chevy Volt will be a plug-in which you can charge at home for 40 miles of travel. It has a gas engine like a hybrid, but that engine is used only to recharge the batteries if they run low before you plug it back in for the night. After the electric car movie, I have little faith that Detroit will actually sell me this car anytime soon, but as the auto executive is quoted as saying, “the public won’t forgive GM twice.” Let’s hope they’re serious this time.
